Prague Sights, Sounds and Hotels
The Old Town Powder Tower was built as one of Prague's major gateways and marks the beginning of the Royal Route along which Bohemian monarchs paraded in medieval times en route to their coronation in St Vitus Cathedral in Prague Castle. The name "Powder Tower" originated when the tower became obsolete as a protective measure and it became instead a gunpowder storehouse. In the early 220th century the Old Town Powder Tower became the meeting place of Franz Kafka and his friend the writer Max Brod. On the west side of the tower is a statue of King Premvsl Otakar 11, and under it is a bawdy relief showing that even in those days girls had to fight off the unwanted attentions of young men.
