Dublin Sights, Sounds and Hotels
Dublin Castle lies on Cork Hill, the highest ground in the area, next to Temple Bar in the heart of historic Dublin. The south-east Record Tower is the final intact medieval tower of the entire city of Dublin. The Octagonal Tower was built in place of an earlier tower in the southern curtain wall from which archers used to cover attack. The south-west Bermingham Tower was reduced to first floor level and rebuilt in 1777 after an explosion. The Square Tower, which adjoins the Bermingham Tower, was shortened to form a gunnery platform, of which the remains are still visible. Directly outside Ship Street Gate is an expanse of medieval town wall, which includes part of the Stanyhurst Tower. The remains of the north-west Corke Tower partially support the modern International Conference Centre. The butt of the north-east Powder Tower contains a section of the 10th Century Viking town defence bank. The medieval city wall connects with the Castle here and there is a little gateway in the wall that used to give access to the moat. Bedford Tower resides in the site of the original Norman Gate, which functioned as guardhouse and prison block.
