The Plaka in Athens is the city’s oldest and most picturesque area. The narrow stone-paved streets and architecture of the houses create an atmosphere of timelessness. In the maze of streets and alleyways it is easy to feel lost, but the sight of the Acropolis will always give you your bearings. Bustling with restaurants, cafes, nightclubs, and shops that offer souvenirs and fine Greek jewellery, it is a tourist’s paradise. In Kydathenaeon Street is the Children’s Museum with a playground and library, and a room in the attic called the ‘Grandmother and Grandfather’ room. This room is a reconstruction of an old Athenian house, and has the old furniture, radio and heater of the era. Children can dress up in period costumes.
